The Bradley SHOW

Bradley Weiss was the man to beat. With already two victories on XTERRA World Tour, in Philippines and Buffelspoort this year, he dreamt of a third one. Mission accomplished!!!

XTERRA REUNION 2015 (25)

“It’s a great thing to win here. I’ve done many beautiful things since I arrived in Reunion Island. I’m discovering a wonderful place here. And moreover when victory is there, it’s fantastic!!”

Before starting, the strongest concurrent of the day, indicated David Hauss as his favorite opponent. He got it quite right. The Reunion guy was the one who made the show. “My idea was to swim as well as I could. I had good feelings, I started first.” said the Reunion guy from France Triathlon team, who went out of the sea with 1’20’’ before others competitors, led by Bradley Weiss and French François Carloni.

1’20’’ is good but when you’re not a good MTB runner it’s a gap that can disappear really fast. Hauss knew that he would suffer on MTB course. And very soon he‘s got passed by Weiss and Carloni. “I knew that MTB will be my advantage. David is a great champion but he’s less used to this kind of effort. At this moment, when we passed him, we had to increase the gap to keep a comfortable distance for the trail course where he’s very faster than us” told Weiss, helped by David Hauss mechanicals problems, who fall at the beginning of the downhill: a skinned knee and a broken crank set. “I’m not very comfortable on technical parts, but there, it became impossible. I’ would have given up but I wanted to finish only for pleasure. Finish first, tenth, or last today didn’t matter.” Concluded Hauss, who finished last MTB kilometers, crank set in his hand, pushing on his feet…

The victory took place between Bradley Weiss and François Carloni. “It was a great fight. On a really technical course”. We’re not used to that kind of course, but physically, I was ok so I could accelerate again” told South African athlete winner in 2h17’20. The Frenchy gave up first. In the lasts kilometers, on La Saline beach, he even lost his second rank to Belgian Yeray Luxem. With three places won, and the best running time, Hauss concluded with an honorific fourth place.

“I had a great fun! What a race!!! It’s wonderful! I’d already ran many XTERRA races over the world, but I think this one is my favorite! Now I have to come back next year!!

Women race

For a long time, we thought they would be inseparable. South African, Carla Van Huyssteen and German Kathrin Muller got out of sea together. Once again they finished MTB course together. But the difference was on ours so technical Reunion Island trails. “I was very good till this point. But as soon as the first technical part began I understood I couldn’t win” recognize Muller, ITU World champion. Carla showed a perfect race. “I didn’t remember to run so difficult trails on XTERRA!!! But I did quite well. Soon I made the gap” told SA champion, winner in 2h38’47 and 9th on final results. Kathrin finished with 9 additional minutes. Logically far away, Claire Baudis from Reunion Island completed the podium. She may guide Carla again who wishes to come back soon “I loved this trip. Sure I’ll come back! I want to take time to discover more those mountains, and I want to run a long trail running race such as Le Grand Raid: the dream!”

Interview Of Mickael Le Goanvic, XTERRA team Director

As this first XTERRA Reunion set concludes are you a relieved organizer?

“I’m happy more than relieved. Everything was adjusted for a few days and we knew that we could count on a great volunteer’s team! What is important now are athletes feed backs. Pro and also others opinion, who ran XTERRA races all over the world, is essential. When finishing, if they are happy, it’s the best thing for us.”

What are you now thinking about to develop your race?

“We have lots of ideas. Now we need the fund. Because we have to create good partnerships. We’ll meet all our partners to imagine how to increase this XTERRA REUNION. We have a very nice race that can promote Reunion Island all over the world. Great athletes who couldn’t participate this year, contacted us for next year”

Do you think partners understand the real potential of this XTERRA?

“Last Thursday, during our big show, they became aware of the great impact of this XTERRA. On what they said, they seemed to go further with us. They have been seduced by our wish to develop our links with South Africa, Mauritius and our proposal of a big Indian Ocean XTERRA tour.”
