An exciting 3 day ULTRA event that is sure to stoke the motivational fires during the winter season
B-Active Sport, one of the country’s leading Events Management Companies has put together a very unique event, ULTRA-X that is sure to contribute to the long standing tradition of South African athletes that are fuelled daily by this endurance event phenomena.
The event, scheduled for JULY 5th – 7th, starting at the Sterkfontein Dam in the Free State and ending 3 days later at the Champagne Sports Resort in the Drakensburg, will be sure to attract a host of athletes looking for that something a little “different” to do during the so-called winter/ off-season.
Day 1 will see athletes compete in either a 2km or 4km swim followed by a 105km cycle. For those athletes that that fear the cold, a good quality wetsuit will suffice as the average water temperature at this time of year is 14 degrees. Not too bad for during the middle of winter and they get to swim at an altitude of 1700m above sea level. The swim starts at 9:30am followed by a 105km cycle that will see the cyclists finish Day 1 at the Champagne Sport Resort. What makes this particular cycle leg so unique is the fact that competitors will make the descent of the infamous Oliviershoek Pass. They will cycle “down-hill” for almost 18km as they drop around 800m in altitude from top to bottom. If ever there was a cycle race deemed as “downhill” all the way, this is it. The speed freaks will be in their element as will those just looking for some cycle scenery that is different to the weekend norm
Athletes will then enjoy a sumptuous dinner at Champagne Sport Resort whilst they rest, recover and prepare for the start of DAY 2.
For those athletes not too keen on the swim, you are in luck. There is the 2 day option as well whereby you can forfeit Day One’s events and start from scratch on Day 2.
Day 2 will start off with a hearty breakfast after which athletes will take on a 145km cycle challenge that will see them circumnavigate around the towns of Bergville, LadySmith and then Winterton, to end up back at the resort. Talk about seeing the South African country-side by bike, this is it. Competitors will then finish off Day 2 with an 8km run around the resorts golf course.
Day 3 will be set aside for running only as the trail element comes into effect. Athletes will chose from either a 21km or 31km trail run loop that takes place on the highly rated Cathkin trails.
With a R10 000 prize purse set aside for the Top Finishers in the ULTRA X 3 day challenge, the event is sure to attract some of the lands leading exponents in the disciplines of swim, bike and run. Donovan Van Gelder and Rudolf Naude have already confirmed their entries for this inaugural event.
Apart from the top athletes attending, an event like this is ideally suited and aimed at the family person who wishes to compete in their favourite sport types but at the same time, enjoy some family down-time by bringing along the extra members to enjoy some of the resorts amenities. There is plenty entertainment for the kids and spouses to enjoy over the course of the 3 day weekend.
If you are looking to build into the summer season and find some new renewed inspiration to keep the fitness fires going over winter, then this event is for you.
