TRAUTMAN GRABS COMEBACK WIN

The quaint towns of Hermanus and Stanford came alive on Saturday as the inaugural Pura Soda Race 2 Stanford kicked off with a chilly but turquoise clear & calm 1.9km swim in and around the Hermanus New Harbour.

Athletes then cycled a challenging 90km bike ride through the beautiful Hemel en Aarde Valley, up Shaws Pass and back (up and) down into Stanford where the iconic Village Green saw athletes transition into their run gear. The leafy green riverside Stanford Wandelpad welcomed runners in all its beauty as they ran 3 loops of 7km alongside the Klein Rivier.

Generous prize money was up for grabs from event partner National Health Care providing a prize pot of R30,000 for the top 3 men and ladies.

Matt Trautman put on a super human performance to win (4:18) the men’s event to mark his comeback to the sport, after a freak accident saw him spending the better half of this year in rehab.

Local favourite and mother of 3 Kelly Van Der Toorn claimed the title winning the ladies leg in a time of 5:42, followed closely by multiple Dusi Canoe Marathon winner Robyn Owen with young rising star, fresh off the Kona podium Gabriella Gioia not too far behind.
Results of the ultra distance triathlon (1st) Matt Trautman 4:18, (2nd) JP Burger 4:25, (3rd) Stuart Marais 4:32. In the ladies, (1st) Kelly Van Der Toorn 5:42, (2nd) Robyn Owen 5:50 and (3rd) Gabriella Gioia 6:01.

Winner Matt Trautmann, said of the race “The Pura Soda Race 2 Stanford course is what one could call Honest. The hilly one lap bike course, exposed to the elements, made for a real test of strength and character. Thankfully the scenic run in Stanford and relaxed atmosphere made for a great finish. Thanks to Paul Ingpen and his team for a superb race and a very welcomed addition to the South African race calendar”
