The Sun City Ultra on the 6th of May has extended it’s pre-entries. Entries for this fast approaching national triathlon has athletes scurrying to get their entries in before they close at midnight on the 19th April.
The race entry deadline has been extended due to Ironman athletes racing in mid April, wanting to get their entry post race entry in, while making use of their peak fitness.
This is the one triathlon event in South Africa where the actual race location is a key factor in the overwhelming success of this particular race that forms part of the MiWay Ultra Tri-Series. Sun City has played host to some of the world’s top sporting events over the years and this triathlon is no exception. Just over an hour’s drive from JHB and PTA, one would be forgiven for thinking you were racing in a tropical paradise with a “beach’ start swim in the resort lake, followed by a picturesque flat cycle that then culminates in a run around the Sun City and Lost City world-renowned golf courses. Add to that, some of the best hotels and entertainment available on the planet and you are set for a very exciting fun-filled weekend of racing and relaxation with the family and friends.
Racing will get underway on Sunday the 6th May at around 7:15am with the sprint triathletes off first over the 600m triangular swim course. The water at this time of year is still warm and most athletes opt for a non-wetsuit swim. With a slight chill in the air at race start time, things quickly heat up with ideal racing conditions greeting the athletes over the flat 20km cycle (out and back course) with only 1 hill to speak about as athletes make their way back to the hotel for the final 5km run leg which takes place on the golf courses paved brick-paths.
The Ultra Guys and Girls are off next with a 2 loop swim to make up the required 1.9km swim distance, followed by 2 loops of 45km on the bike with the turn-around point being down at the main entrance gates to the resort. The run is also a 2 loop affair with some challenging sections on offer as athletes gradually climb up to the Lost City before the plunge back down the hill to the start of the 2nd loop and Finish VIP area.
For those athletes looking at doing the 70.3 in Durban in June, this is an ideal platform to come and test the fitness and practice your nutritional needs under race conditions. It is also the final race up in the Gauteng area that is raced under “warmer” conditions before the winter finally sets in and the training and racing take a back-seat for the next couple of months.
Get your entry in now to avoid disappointment. Spend the weekend away with the family and friends and experience what it’s like to race in a tropical paradise setting that is the Sun City Resort. Plenty of additional entertainment on offer over the duration of the weekend to keep the family active and happy while you race for fun and the pure enjoyment and excitement of competing in the sport of Triathlon.
