With the weather forecast looking somewhat gloomy, conditions turned out as almost perfect as the 350 athletes took to the water at 7am. Jeff Norton lead the swimmers around the 600m surf swim with Gore Chasing hard in 3rd place behind a visiting foreign Frenchman here on a training stint. Once onto the bike, Gore was able to form a 4 man group on the draft legal 20km bike route that took place around the confines of the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The leading group were never going to be caught by the chasers as they headed for transition area and their run shoes in anticipation of the flat 5km run loop along the promenade. Gore, hard in training for this week’s coming Ironman South Africa down in Port Elizabeth, put down the hammer at the start of the run with only Johnny De Dominicus able to follow. He managed to drop De Dominicus with about 2.5km to go and headed across the finisher line in a shade of 64 minutes.
De Dominicus followed 12 seconds later with Gilbert Quevavilliers rounding out the top podium spots with a fine performance to clinch a well deserved 3rd place finish. Tayla Glover never looked back as she won the ladies event in 70minutes. She was too strong for the woman competitors as she lead the swim, bike and then finished it off in style on the run leg.
This caps a very successful National FUTURE LIFE K-SWISS TRIATHLON SERIES. Gore was quoted as saying “with these two fantastic sponsors in place, along with the rest of the series co-sponsors, the sport of triathlon is set to bloom and we are looking at growing this series with a few extra events in 2012.
