Haig Gibb and Geraldine von Fintel put in superb performances at the Triathlon Plus KZN Duathlon Champs held yesterday at Midmar Dam to win their respective races for 2018.

Gibb was the defending champion after his win at the same venue last year but a repeat was never going to be easy with Donovan Van Gelder and Brad Venter in attendance

The ladies race was also set-up to be equally exciting with Von Fintel having Teneal Featherby and Desiree Verwey for good company over the fast but at the same time, tough Midlands Race Course

Racing got underway with a Sub Youth race which is a new category that has been introduced in KZN to accommodate the youngsters aged 9-12. The Youth Race (12 – 15yr olds) was 2nd on the start sheet list with some exciting youngsters looking to earn their places to represent the province at the SA Duathlon Champs that will take place at the same venue on July 1st

The Sprint Race had some of the best Juniors in SA toeing the line and this race did not disappoint with Asher Biggs taking the win for the men (his training partner Ben De La Porte unfortunately had a bike mechanical and had to drop out during the bike) while Amber Schlebusch was in sublime form to take the Juniors ladies title

The Seniors got their 1st 10km run underway just before 9am and it was Sanele Shange that posted a sub 34 minute run split to head out onto the bike a good few minutes ahead of his nearest rivals. The favourites however in the form of Gibb, Venter and Van Gelder all entered the T1 within seconds of each and this did not change as they completed their 40km bike distance in well under 60 minutes to come off the bike within 5 seconds of each other…

Van Gelder started the last 5km run fast but it was Gibb who surged around the 1km marker to put some time between him and his nearest rival heading to the turn-point. Gibb was in control over the final 3km with Van Gelder taking some of the heat off his run speed towards the end to secure the 2nd position while Venter was in a well-deserved 3rd spot finish

On the ladies side – Von Fintel, Verwey and Featherby were always within touching distance of each other after the first 10km run and then the 40km cycle. Von Fintel managed to hang a little tougher over the last 5km run to take the win with Featherby in 2nd and Verwey coming home in 3rd spot. A mere 40 seconds separating all 3 ladies at the end of this epic race duel

SA Duathlon Champs will take place on the same course in July and most of these athletes will once again be in attendance as they strive to turn the provincial titles into SA Titles
